Accommodation in the Bayerischer Wald (Bavarian Forest), Germany is generally much cheaper than in similarly beautiful but more popular areas such as the Black Forest and Bavarian Alps. Hotels range from simple to luxurious resort-style complexes.

Hotels & Restaurants in Bodenmais, Germany

Bodenmais is by far the most popular town in the Bavarian Forest with close to a million annual overnight guests. Visitors have a large choice from rooms to large, almost resort-like hotels. All the hotels listed below have at least one swimming pool and a sauna on the premises.

The resort-like Hotel Riederin is at the edge of the town in a huge park with lovely panoramic views of Bodenmais and the surrounding countryside. Rooms are large and comfortably furnished although a bit bland. The sport facilities are extensive including two swimming pools, various saunas and other spa services, tennis courts, a 6-hole golf course with driving range, and a jogging course. Guided hiking and cycling tours are available. Food in the rustic restaurant is unmistakably Bavarian. Room prices include breakfast and dinner. At the edge of town is the very pleasant Hotel Mooshof. It places high emphasis on sport and relaxation with two swimming pools, several saunas, and massages. Guest may use the hotels own driving range for free and receive discounts on local green fees. The modern and large rooms use stylish, high-quality furniture and accessories. Hotel Neue Post has comfortably rooms in various sizes using mostly natural wood furniture. Many have balconies. A large spa area and garden are for guests use only. Feriengut Böhmhof is a large estate on the edge of the forest. Several hiking, cycling, and in winter cross-country skiing routes start from here. Rooms are available in various price categories but all are spacious, bright, modern, and comfortably furnished. Hotels & Restaurants in Viechtach, Germany

In the heart of town is the very pleasant Hotel Schmaus, which has been in the family for 13 generations. Although parts of this former stagecoach inn are 400 years old, rooms are modern with those in the older section the more pleasant. Hotels & Restaurants in Cham, Germany

The Parkhotel Cham is a typical, modern country-style hotel with a lovely location on the banks of the Regen to the south of Cham. The comfortably furnished rooms are large and bright with lightwood furniture. Almost all rooms have balconies or terraces. The hotel has 16 tennis courts, saunas, a hot tub, solarium, and bicycle rental for guests. The Bistro serves simple international and regional dishes. At the edge of the old town is the Randsberger Hof, a modern hotel with a long history. Rooms are modern and functionally furnished. Attached to the hotel is a cinema and sport center with ten-pin bowling and squash courts. The two restaurants are rustic and serve international and regional cuisine. To the south of Cham, only ten minutes walk from the Marienmünster is the very pleasant and quietly located Gasthaus Am Ödenturm. It is in a large, typical Bavarian mountain resort-style house with only 12 rooms. Natural wood is used throughout the hotel with rooms decorated cheerfully. The excellent restaurant with rustic and stylish sections serves local specialties with a light touch and has a large variety of dishes including game. Cham has many pleasant restaurants but the Bräu-Pfandl, Lucknerstraße 11, tel 09971-20-787, is a cut above the rest. It is a comfortable, rustic three-room restaurant with wooden floors and wood-paneled walls. The Brasserie has vaulted ceilings. The food is mostly regional and classical cuisine with a light touch.

 

Youth Hostels in the Bayerischer Wald (Bavarian Forest), Germany

The youth hostels in the Bavarian Forest are generally in small towns but beautifully located in or near forested areas. However, public transportation is not always very frequent or convenient to reach the hostels.

The DJH Waldhäuser is in the heart of the National Park and an ideal base for hiking and cycling excursions. This area has the most reliable snowfall in the forest making the hostel very popular during the ski season. It can be reached by bus from Zwiesel or Grafenau but the service is limited. The DJH Bayerisch Eisenstein is close to the Czech border, 30 minutes walk from the station on a well-marked route towards Großer Arber. Ski equipment can be rented on site. Camping in the Bayerischer Wald (Bavarian Forest), Germany

AZUR Ferienpark Bayerischer Wald is in Zwiesel and has very good facilities. It has 600 lots and is open year round. 94227 Zwiesel, tel 09922-802-595, fax 09922-802-594.
